El RSS y los lectores RSS mataron el diseño de superficie
Nunca he sido un fan de lectores RSS. Me gusta disfrutar del diseño gráfico en el diseño web y todavía lo hago. Pero desde hace un año empecé a usar lectores RSS basados en software, luego probé algunos lectores en linea. Acabo de organizar mis paginas mas visitadas y varios RSS en google reader.

James Garrett, autor de ¨The Elements of User Experience¨, un libro esencial para el diseñador, diseñador web, editores de contenido web, desarrolladores, etc. Señala cinco niveles para desarrollar y trabajar en el diseño web. Iniciando desde la estrategia, el mas abstracto hasta superficie que es el plano mas concreto, donde esta el diseño visual, la gráfica, de alguna manera lo superficial como tipografía, texturas, fotos, medidas pixel a pixel, etc.

Cuando creamos contenido web se requiere pensar en los usuarios que acceden al material a través de lectores RSS, que no están viendo el diseño de la pagina, algunos ya nisiquiera se imaginan como se esta viendo la pagina original, que leen los blogs en netvibes, google reader, etc. son visitantes que priorizan contenidos y estar actualizado al instante. Funcionalidad y usabilidad extrema.

Ahora es evidente que el diseño web y las plataformas de contenido están sacando mucha lata en gráfica y diseño web (del barroco kitch de HI5 a equlibrio en experiencia de usuario y usabilidad como facebook), se esta repensando procesos y diseño web estructural desde otros puntos de vista (estructura, jerarquía, etiquetas, alcance, etc), pasando a un plano mucho menos importante el aspecto visual de la pagina, y en muchos casos incluso el esqueleto. Tener algunos RSS en google reader hace leer el contenido web de forma plana en estilo google, la superficie o diseño grafico esta basado en convenciones, haciendo énfasis en lectura, interfaz y rapidez en procesos de uso.

Alguien que utiliza lectores RSS para leer noticias, mails, twitters, blogs, fotos, videos, etc, a diario, muchas veces no están disfrutando del diseño gráfico de las paginas. Este énfasis en contenidos y el RSS cambiarán de forma drástica la manera en que se hace diseño gráfico para web, ya que el RSS mató el diseño de superficies, queda ver como se solucionan estos retos desde la interface.

I´ve never been a fan of RSS readers. I use to enjoy the graphic design of homepages pages and I still do. But since a year ago, I start using to read RSS software readers, then I went for various online readers. Now I just finished organizing all my RSS, personal, friends, twitters, etc.. into google reader.

Starting from the strategy plane, and climbing up until surface, where surface is just the visual design, the very concret level, the graphics, the superficial stuff kind of, tipography, colours, texture,  header photos, etc.

When creating web content we need to think in readers that grab content in RSS readers which in most cases they are not looking or even wondering about the design of the webpage, those users prioritize content and fast updates / feedback. Extreme funcionality and usabillity.

Now is evident that web design and web based content platforms are cutting the crap in visuals (from the barroque kitch of HI5 to facebook, emphasizing user experience and a balanced interface) people start to re-thinks web design processes and structural web design from others views like structure, hierachy, tags, scope, etc. becoming less important the visual aspect of a homepage and in most cases even the skeleton. Having some RSS in google reader for example makes you read plain content in google style.

Also, someone who uses RSS readers to check news, mails, twiters, blogs, photos, videos, etc, on a daily basis don´t have time to waste in looking the design of a homepage. The readers will change dramatically the way we do graphic design for web, as the RSS killed surface design, waiting to see how interface design face this challenges.
